GAMES OF THE MONTH | AUGUST 2003

NIGHT TRAP

Mega CD Pal | 1993

The really controversial and terrifying yet harmless but crap actually original full motion video game. This game was one of the first ever Mega CD titles and came with plenty of attention.

You play the part of an agent as a member of S.C.A.T - Sega Control Attack Team ( has a different meaning now).Your mission is to prevent any harm to from coming to a group of 5 teenage girls heading to a house to spend the night. Sounds simple enough. Soon into the game a ‘horrifying’ chain of events gets underway.

Night Trap was re-released as an uncut version later as a Halloween special. What was uncut about it remains mostly unknown - to me any way. The game was again re-released as a MegaCD32X title sporting better quality video and a slightly different play interface. A PC version also exists.

A feature for Night Trap can be found here.

DR ROBOTNIK'S MEAN BEAN MACHINE

Mega Drive Pal | 1993

Dr Robotnik gets his own game of sorts in this spin off puzzler based on the acient puzzle game of Puyo Puyo.

The game is a simple yet addictive. You have a column of falling ‘beans’ which you must match up 4 colors or more. As the game progresses the beans fall quicker. When the area is full the game is over.

You are pitched against one of Robotniks drones with increasing difficulty.

This game ultimately gets pretty difficult.

Mean Bean Machine was also released on Master System and Game Gear. The game has later appeared on Sonic Mega Collection for the Game Cube.

DESCENT 2

PC DOS + Glide

The sequel to the popular 3D tunneling - ship combat game from Parallax.

Gameplay for the most part is left unchanged from the original. You enter several maze like mines, destroy the main reactor and escape. New items in this game include extra weapons and upgrades to your ship such as the afterburner, mercury missiles and the helpful addition of the Guide Bot.

The game is best played under DOS with a Voodoo based card for smooth hi resolution modes although it can be played under Windows 9x with no problems.

This version was also released on Playstation. A totally revamped Descent 3 was released in 2001 for PC.

Descent 2

METAL SLUG X

Neo Geo

Another installment in the world renowned Metal Slug series. This game sticks with the same cartoon style side scrolling action as with the previous titles. This game has several extra tweaks to the gameplay - extra characters, more vehicles amongst others.

Metal Slug X is easily described as a enhanced version of Metal Slug 2. The Metal Slug series continues with Metal Slug 3 and Metal Slug 4 being released in 2002on Neo Geo. Metal Slug X has also been released on Playstation.
