Extra stuff for the fans in a little thin and there is still no sign of cult favourites Sonic CD or Knuckles Chaotix.

WONDERBOY IN MONSTERLAND

Master System

Wonder Boy’s second outing. This game was also coded by Westone and appeared in the arcades.

11 years later Wonder Land was in peril from a ferocious fire-breathing dragon and it’s army of monsters. Word of Tom-Tom’s brave efforts to resuce his best friend (Wonder Boy) had spread throughout Wonder Land which has now become Monster Land. Tom-Tom, now a teenager is summoned and set’s out on an incredible journey to save the land.

You start the game armed with nothing and you have to progress through 12 levels with the final maze round being notorious to anyone who has attempted to complete it.

The gameplay is a gentle merge between action platform and RPG. The RPG elements of game a very simplistic. Throughout the course of the game you will encounter demons who when slain will provide you with gold or other useful items.

Wonder Boy went on for a third instalment following directly from this game. Wonder Boy 3: The Dragons Trap.

Wonder Boy In Monster Land

WONDER BOY 3: THE DRAGONS TRAP

Master System

The conclusive title to Wonder Boy in Monster Land. This game follows on immediately from the last level of Wonder Boy in Monster Land. When you defeat the final MEKA Dragon you discover that he has the ability to bestow curses. In our case turning him into a lizard.

Your quest is then to find a fabled Salamander Cross that will restore him to human form.

Though gameplay stays true to an action platformer it is now heavy into the RPG mode of game play. For example, your form will change from lizard man to mouse man and lion man etc who can only do things in certain places with certain equipment which you have to buy or obtain through travelling.

The game is great little adventure not too deep for those not really into the genre.

Technically the game sports probably the best Master System graphics seen easily matching some Mega Drive games.

This game was released for the Game Gear under the title Wonder Boy: Dracon’s Revenge. Since this there have been successive Wonder Boy releases for Mega Drive and Master System. This would be an excellent Sega character to come back in a modern game…
