GAMES OF THE MONTH | MARCH 2004

MARVEL VS CAPCOM

Dreamcast Pal | 1999

An ultra intense 2D beat em up of the Street Fighter 2 vein.

An array of super heroes from the world of Marvel Comics with the likes of Spiderman and Captain America take on the might of some of Capcom’s games characters such as Ryu from Street Fighter and Strider just for the hell of it!

You choose 2 characters to team up and take on 2 others. You can tag in and out and choose a special guest character to jump in with an attack of their own.

This was originally an arcade game and is a perfect conversion to the Dreamcast. Virtually no loading times and blazingly fast game play with devastating attacks from all characters.

A version was also released on Playstation. Marvel Vs Capcom 2 was released on Dreamcast, X Box and PS2 and is part of a huge range of ‘Them Vs Them’ titles.

FIGHTING VIPERS 2

Dreamcast Pal 1999

A classic Saturn title gets an overhaul for the Dreamcast. Developed again by AM2 this followed on behind VF3 as a fighter and is a port of the Model 3 arcade game.

There are hardly any changes to the gameplay from the original except the the addition of two new characters. It’s 1 on 1 combat in a cage, with a weapon and some armour you can beat off your opponent.

Being on the Dreamcast the game provides super slick visuals. The animations are ultra smooth with crystal-clear detail all running at 60 FPS.

Fighting Vipers 2

STAR GUNNER

PC DOS

A great side scrolling 2D shoot em up from Apogee. This is one of a few arcade class shooters available for the PC – short of emulation.

Pretty generic is generic as far as space shooters go; 1 ship against thousands. The Zile are preparing to invade your planet of Ytima. In a heavily armed Stargunner you set about destroying them before they destroy you.

Destroying the waves and waves of oncoming enemies, weapon turrets and sea creatures gives you credits to buy various upgrades for your ship.

The best environment to play this game is under DOS with a VESA 2.0 video card. For those of you who bother then this makes for a visual treat. The ships are animated to great detail and explode in a shower of shrapnel all incredibly smooth flowing.

A shareware version which contains the scout mission (about 7 levels) can be downloaded from Fileshack

SUPER GHOULS AND GHOSTS

Gameboy Advance

One of Capcom’s most classic titles comes to the Gameboy Advance.

This is essentially a port of the SNES version with the difficulty level ported and intact. The game can be very difficult and defiantly in need of good reactions form the player.

There are a few tweaks to the game play that do not feature in other versions, the double jump being one of them.

The levels from the classic arcade mode are included for those wanting to play them.

Ghouls and Ghosts has appeared on loads of formats over the years.
